Winter Olympics Betting: Brit Watch Day 6

Like a Somalian pirate, Dan ‘The Betting Man’ Fitch has an innate ability to sniff out gold and he can see some glistening on the horizon with Team GB’s name on it.

“Rudman is in a relationship with the Men’s Skeleton star, Kristan Bromley. Presumably their eyes met across a crowded track before one of them suddenly plummeted downhill at 85 mph.”

A few days into the Winter Olympics and the Brits are still without a single bit of gold, silver or bronze.

Who needs medals, anyway? Well, if the current medal table tells us anything, it’s that the Americans and the Germans have a pathological need for glory, but then we already knew about their penchant for world domination.

The British prefer to see ourselves as a little bit crap, which is why we’re all able to enjoy the Games. We can just have a laugh at how rubbish we are, without any of those butterflies in the stomach regarding hopes of gold.

But hark… What’s this looming on Thursday’s horizon? Is it the spectre of some genuine medal hopes? Oh well, go on then. We do like a little bit of bling.

Shelley Rudman was the only British participant to win a medal in the Turin games, where she won silver (so much classier than gold). Today, Shelley will start her campaign to go one better in the Women’s Skeleton, in the opening two heats. Rudman can be backed at 8.4 to win gold, while fellow Brit Amy Williams is available at 16.5.

Williams won a silver medal in the 2009 World Championships and hails from Bath. It may well be the name of her hometown, which first gave her the idea of making a living from sliding down a hill, Last Of The Summer Wine-style.

Rudman is in a relationship with the Men’s Skeleton star, Kristan Bromley. Presumably their eyes met briefly across a crowded track before one of them suddenly plummeted downhill at 85 mph.

The men’s competition also kicks off today, with Bromley priced at 17.5 to win gold. The finals of both skeleton events will take place in the early hours of Friday morning.

Elsewhere, the frankly overworked Steve Jackson, will compete in the Men’s 20km Biathlon (remember to load that gun Steve!), while Scottish snowboarder Lesley McKenna will be pulling all sorts of moves in the Women’s Halfpipe.

The men’s curling team are back on track, having beaten France 9-4, after an opening loss to Sweden. Today they can be backed at 1.15 to beat Denmark and 1.3 to beat Switzerland later in the evening. Curling buff Steve Cram has certainly got his work cut out today.

It’s the women’s team who are making all the headlines, after beating the world champions China yesterday. Today they take on another superpower in the shape of Russia and are available at 8.2 to take gold.
