League Two Betting Preview: Make or break March

When you eat a sandwich, the best bit is in the middle. In similar fashion, gamblers should not just look to the obvious games at top or bottom for their weekly bets, but to the play-off hopefuls, writes Ian Lamont. “Back John Sheridan’s men at 1.85 at home to Port Vale, whose boss Micky Adams outlined a few weeks ago what his side needed to do to reach the top seven.” Northampton have taken a fair while to come to the boil this season. Yet now they sit near the top of the form table, arguably at the best time of year to kick on

Cheltenham Handicap Focus: Tuesday

One thing which many punters do at Cheltenham is to look for the “plot horses” – those which have been running down the field and now look well treated, but the truth is that the handicaps at the Festival are so competitive that doing so means possibly missing the cut and the vast majority of winners are those who arrive at the track in demonstrably good form and I’ll try to narrow down these races each day to find the real value. “Theatrical Moment is a novice who needs to improve his jumping but he’s getting better with each outing and has impressed by the way he’s travelled in his few chases to date. He was the top bumper performer in the UK a couple of seasons ago and has a touch of class about him. He’s also versatile regarding tactics which is a benefit here.” 14:40 William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase (3m 1/2f) The Wiiliam Hill Trophy is always a classy handicap chase and five previous winners have gone on to win the Gold Cup itself, the last being Charter Party back in 1986. This year’s renewal looks well up to scratch with eight of the runners rated 150 or more. Historically, it’s been very difficult for fully exposed handicappers to win this and those with such high ratings rarely have any secrets from the handicapper, so I’ll pass over those in that group which include the well fancied Niche Market, Razor Royale and The Totherone. The first two mentioned probably left their chance behind with tough races in the last few weeks anyway. In looking for the winner of this, I prefer to look at a horse who has had less than a dozen races over fences and may still have a bit of improvement in him (I’d say “or her” but the only mare to have won this was subsequent Gold Cup winner Kerstin over half a century ago, and she had only 10-5 that day), and it’s a race in which novices have done well (Wichita Lineman, Dun Doire and Fork Lightning have all won in recent seasons)

League One Betting Preview: Back a tight derby at the Den

Millwall against Charlton is one of several top League One games coming up this Saturday, all of which have the potential to cause a ripples in the promotion markets, writes Alan Dudman. “High octane derbies can often boil over, either with plenty of goals and bad challenges, or they can fail to live up to the hype.” Millwall 2.32 v Charlton Athletic 3.45 , the draw 3.15 Ahhh, memories of my days living in south east London come flooding back as we head, feet first maybe, into this weekend’s derby and the battle of the ’sarf’. Millwall are in good health at the moment, and tackle their third game in the space of a week. Last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Walsall was a slight surprise, but convincing wins either side of that game (including Tuesday’s 3-1 thumping of Carlisle) mean we’re not going to get too much fat on the bone with their price. Factor in their impressive home form – and 2.32 is just about right. That home record would be giving Charlton’s boss Phil Parkinson plenty to mull over. Millwall have won their last four in Bermondsey, and have only conceded the one (to Norwich). In a word – impressive.

XY Factor – Thursday 11 March

The XY Factor is heading to Wolverhampton on Thursday…. Today’s Race: Wolverhampton 8.30 Today’s Bet and current Betfair price: 2 point win and 2 point place SINGBELLA 11.5 Yesterday’s Return: -4.00 Running Return (March) -16.28 VERDICT: SINGBELLA appeals at double figure odds in the Wolverhampton finale. The Clive Cox trained runner failed to show much in three starts as a three-year-old but hinted at ability on her reappearance over course and distance last time out. Her stable do well with their runners here and she is interesting win and place.

Cheltenham 2010: Festival doubles and trebles

Wayne Bailey takes a look at the Festival multiples on Betfair where punters can back or lay their Bankers and Bismarks in doubles and trebles… “Backing odds-on at Cheltenham can be a tricky business and don’t forget that Voy Por Ustedes and Kasbah Bliss were considered ‘good things’ last year yet both were beaten.” A few years back, I read a book called ‘Against The Crowd’ by professional punter Alan Potts in which he explains that you must move away from the sheep mentality if you want to get an edge in this game. I’d generally agree with those sentiments but I must admit, it can be lonely going against the crowd at times – and when I told the lads down in the local that I was opposing Master Minded at the Cheltenham Festival this year, I found myself supporter-less! At the moment, there are four odds-on Festival horses and a very good case can be made for each ( Dunguib, Master Minded, Big Bucks and Kauto Star ) in their respective races. But backing odds-on at Cheltenham can be a tricky business and don’t forget that Voy Por Ustedes and Kasbah Bliss were considered ‘good things’ last year yet both were beaten ; indeed, I had a significant bet on Voy Por that year and watching the replays are still painful

Bundesliga Betting: Schalke can win this weekend but can they go all the way?

Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga last season when everyone wrote them off but can Schalke emulate them this year, asks Kevin Hatchard. Plus the best of this weekend’s betting. “If you are going to back Schalke to win the Bundesliga, back them now. If they come through the next few games unscathed, those odds could shorten considerably.

The Cheltenham Festival: Successful Sires

Timeform take a look at a handful of stallions whose progeny have produced the goods over the years at Cheltenham… “One French stallion whose progeny always merit respect on these shores is Cadoudal , best known as the sire of Big Buck’s .” One of the clearest trends in National Hunt racing in recent years has been the spectacular success enjoyed by horses imported from France . One need only look at the Timeform ratings for confirmation of this – French-breds currently sit at the top of Timeform’s ratings for staying chasers, two-mile chasers, novice chasers, staying hurdlers, two-mile hurdlers and NH Flat horses. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that French-breds have come to the fore at jumping’s premier event, the Cheltenham Festival. One French stallion whose progeny always merit respect on these shores is Cadoudal , best known as the sire of Big Buck’s . That horse’s victory in last year’s World Hurdle was the third for Cadoudal’s progeny over the last ten Festivals, adding to Fadoudal du Cochet’s win in the 2002 Grand Annual and Majadou’s triumph in the 1999 Mildmay of Flete. There is every chance of that number increasing this year as horses sired by Cadoudal hold decent claims in several races. Big Buck’s obviously spearheads the challenge as he seeks to add another World Hurdle to his collection, while Timeform’s top-rated novice chaser Long Run is towards the head of the markets for both the Arkle and the RSA Chase. The Nightingale (RSA Chase) and Chamirey (Pertemps Final) are two other representatives of Cadoudal who are reportedly heading to Prestbury Park.

Six Nations Betting Preview: Scotland v England

As two hapless England coaches – one former, one current – come face to face for this weekend’s Calcutta Cup clash, Geoffrey Riddle urges punters to consider Betfair’s points and tries markets. “This match is only going to be of interest to gamblers and the tribalism of English and Scottish rugby fans. For everyone else, it is likely to be an extremely dull arm-wrestle of a match.” Sir Thomas Browne , the Restoration writer and physician, wrote in his Religio Medici that ‘obstinacy in a bad cause, is but constancy in a good.’ It is a mantra that hovers over both Andy Robinson and Martin Johnson, the stubborn coaches of Scotland and England, as they prepare their charges for this weekend’s Calcutta Cup match in Edinburgh

Premier League Darts Betting: Week Five

Jaymes Monte believes he has found a bet to take advantage of a recurring chink in Phil Taylor’s armour… “Phil Taylor maintains a 100% record whilst Mervyn King has just one blot on his copybook after he came unstuck against an on fire ‘Rocket’ in week three. He has since returned to winning ways with a good victory over Terry Jenkins and now meets his old foe head on in a battle for top spot.” Although I doubt that the outcome of tonight’s game will have much effect on whether or not either player makes it to finals day, there’s genuine reason to get excited about this match-up between the league’s top two players. That is because it is the first game of this year’s Premier League in which both players have legitimate claims of being near top form ahead of the meeting. Phil Taylor maintains a 100% record in the league whilst Mervyn King has just one blot on his copybook after he came unstuck against an on-fire ‘Rocket’ in week three. He has since returned to winning ways with a good victory over Terry Jenkins last week and now meets his old foe head on in a battle for top spot
