Kempton Placepot: Saturday 27th March

Lots of excitement surrounds the opening meeting of the Flat season at Doncaster, but the supporting card from Kempton also has a fascinating look to it and it strikes as a more realistic target for Placepot purposes too. “..on the basis that Elnawin, who won the Sirenia over course and distance in 2008, is the sole front-runner in a potentially muddling minor event, we’ve decided to bank on Richard Hannon’s four-year-old in the first.” 2.20 – Lines need to be preserved for a little later on, so on the basis that Elnawin , who won the Sirenia over course and distance in 2008, is the sole front-runner in a potentially muddling minor event, we’ve decided to bank on Richard Hannon’s four-year-old in the first

Weekend Racing Betting: In-depth previews of the Dubai World Cup and Lincoln Handicap

From Donny to Dubai. That is the bill for this Saturday’s racing and you can’t knock the menu on the score of variety. Racing UK and betmaverick.com analyst Graham Cunningham is lukewarm on the Lincoln but determined to crack Dubai as he casts his eye over the desert action. “Vision D’Etat has yet to race on an artificial surface, but that clearly isn’t the concern it used to be and the bottom line is that he is a proven Group 1 globetrotter with a superb strike rate. Like Gio Ponti he already boasts a verdict over Twice Over and his turn of foot could be a very valuable asset if he shrugs off a late health scare.” Pen, Mull and Extra the three off a difficult Lincoln tee If you tried to fashion the most fiendishly difficult contest imaginable then you could do a lot worse than a straight mile handicap with 22 runners, soft ground, a potential draw bias and concerns about whether many of the field are fully wound up after a winter break. But, for all its complexities, history still dictates that the Lincoln heralds the return of big time Flat racing on turf in Britain . You can probably guess that my heart doesn’t exactly skip a beat at the thought of cracking this annual spring puzzle on the Town Moor at Doncaster .

Never say Nevertika again after Haydock fiasco

Graham Cunningham was shocked by an episode at Haydock in midweek so why did the sport’s trade press take no notice? “What would have been the reaction of the punting public and paid press had a gambled-on favourite at last week’s Cheltenham Festival bolted a circuit before running like Nevertika did?” I’m beginning to think I have lost my nose for a good news story. Why so? Well, I saw a horse get backed from 9-1 to 3-1 for a valuable handicap hurdle at Haydock on Wednesday. I then saw that same horse drift rapidly out to 10-1 on Betfair after bolting for a full circuit with his jockey powerless to pull him up. And then I looked on with my jaw hitting the floor as that same horse was allowed to run when all the available evidence suggested he had to be withdrawn. It was entirely predictable that the James Ewart-trained Nevertika ran as if his legs had been tied together after wasting so much energy beforehand.

Road to the Kentucky Derby: Rivals will set hot pace in Louisiana

Mike Joyce continues to blaze a trail all the way to the Bluegrass State – this week he looks at three races which could throw up significant Derby contenders… “The Louisiana Derby offers the chance of redemption for Ron The Greek… But Discreetly Mine should go as the favorite; he’s got the class and the speed.” With hindsight, a lightly raced son of Pulpit out of a Tabasco Cat mare for hall of fame trainer Nick Zito should not have been such an upset, but Ice Box shocked us all with his victory at 21.0 in last week’s Florida Derby .

In Running Betting: Three to take forward from Cheltenham 2010

Neil Munro looks back on the in-running action from the Cheltenham Festival and selects three horses for in-play betting in jumps races to come “After such a high profile Festival, some of Twiston Davies’ horses may well go off under their true odds and if Pettifour goes off a layable price pre-race, I would get against him and then look to back him in-running at a likely higher price to cover my liability.” Was it only a week ago that we were enjoying the thrills and spills of Cheltenham 2010 ? Those four amazing days produced so many wonderful stories but also so many questions. Did Dunguib lose the race or was it the ride his jockey gave him? Do you know a person who layed Binocular at 1000.0 in the ante-post market? Was it the ground that caused the poor run from Master Minded? Did the marketing men do a disservice to the other runners in the Gold Cup, including Imperial Commander, by concentrating on Kauto Star and Denman

SPL News Update: Tony Mowbray leaves Celtic

Celtic part company with manager after just nine months. Hughes and Lambert in the frame to replace him… “Mowbray’s departure won’t affect Betfair’s SPL Winner market as Celtic trade at 100.00 , 10 points behind Rangers, who have been backed at minimum odds of 1.01 .” Tony Mowbray has been relieved of his position as Celtic manager, following the side’s 4-0 humiliation against St Mirren last night. Mowbray met with the club’s chief executive to discuss his future in the light of the shock defeat and it is believed that the official line will be that he has parted company with Celtic “by mutual consent.” The former-West Brom boss took over at Parkhead just nine months ago but the team have endured a torrid season, losing 13 competitive matches. Mowbray’s departure is unlikely to have any bearing on Betfair’s SPL Winner market as Celtic currently trade at 100.00 and find themselves 10 points behind arch-local rivals Rangers, who have been backed at minimum odds of 1.01 . Former-midfielder Neil Lennon , who was first team coach under Mowbray, is likely to take over until the end of the season, at which point the Parkhead board will look to appoint a successor. Paul Lambert, who is having an excellent season in charge of Norwich City, and out of work Mark Hughes are said to be among the leading candidates.

Nick Shiambouros’ Patented 80/20 Bet

Can this Ludlow outsider land the spoils? Today’s 80/20 is Hot Tottie in the 16.10 at Ludlow . She finished a solid second to Miss Nightingale at Exeter earlier this month and displayed a willing attitude all the way to the line. This mare was withdrawn from a similar event last Sunday when she was our 80/20 selection due to the testing conditions. I think she will appreciate the better ground today and should run very well. At present she is trading at 8.6 on the exchange.
