Next he’ll be telling us to “be the ball”… “If you are going to risk one cent on a sporting event, then treat your betting account as a major corporation (don’t laugh)… Identify key factors in the game and judge the mood and motivation of those involved.” I can’t be too specific here because I promised not to be, but I recently spent some time with a scout from a major European football club

Okay, so blooding the youngsters didn’t work out at Exeter on Tuesday, but one of the placepot team stalwarts is back in the hot seat for Wolverhampton on Wednesday and confidence is high that we can score with minimal lines. “Banking in a claimer hasn’t been particularly fruitful for us in the past, but Cobo Bay boasts better form than most horses contesting such events (won a handicap off a mark of 85 last summer) and has shaped with promise on both starts this year” 5.30 – Having put a line through three on the card (4, 6, 7), the way we see it is that we are effectively playing for two places with four horses. We were going to bank on Monte Major , who’s been in such good form but then, on second thoughts, we decided to go with Misaro , too, as we may as well get two lines through and increase the payout.

Both teams are in very good form domestically but the Portuguese are defending an especially fine home record and Richard Aikman doesn’t see that coming to an end on Thursday night “Aside from leading the Portuguese standings by three points and being on course for a first title in five years, Jorge Jesus’ side have a goal difference that is 28 goals better off than their nearest rivals – and if the concern is that domestic form doesn’t translate onto the European stage then tell that to Hertha Berln, who were crushed 4-0 at the Estadio Da Luz last time out.” This is a clash between two sides who last met in the European Cup semi-final two decades ago – and, like that 1990 encounter, Benfica can be expected to edge out their French visitors once again . With both sides still in contention for domestic titles each will fancy their chances of reaching the quarter-finals at the other’s expense but Benfica’s home advantage and rude health makes them worthy 2.02 favourites to come through the first leg on top

Juve are not at their strongest and the Cottagers could get a result from the biggest game in their European history, Richard Aikman tells you why “Fulham’s best chance to sneak a very attractively priced away win 7.0 is likely to come from set-pieces as goalkeeper Alex Manninger is still prone to fumbling crosses and the likes of Brad Hangeland could take advantage of the brittle Bianconeri rearguard.” In a contest between two wily old coaches entertainment goals are likely to be at a premium when Juventus and Fulham clash at the Stadio Olimpico. Having had the misfortune to witness at first hand one of the most uneventful matches in European football in Turin last week, there is little to convince this writer that Fulham’s trip to northern Italy will be much different to that goalless draw between Juve and Ajax. Bianconeri coach Alberto Zaccheroni and opposite number Roy Hodgson know each other well from the latter’s Serie A days and age has not dimmed either elder statesman’s pragmatic approach. Although Juventus reacted well to their 2-0 home loss to Palermo by beating Fiorentina 2-1 at the weekend, the Viola had half an eye on their Champions League match with Bayern Munich, and were unfortunate to emerge pointless from that match. Juve 1.59 , who have won just once in six home European matches, are missing key personnel in attack with Amauri, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Mauro Camoranesi out injured. On the plus side Diego is in form at last, as is Felipe Melo , but the Brazilian enforcer is suspended, while Giorgio Chiellini and Gianluigi Buffon – Juve’s most consistent performers this campaign – are also out injured. These problems would normally be music to the ears of the side who knocked out holders Shakthar Donestk, were they not without the creativity of Danny Murphy (suspended) and Clint Dempsey (injured); the drab 0-0 FA Cup draw with Tottenham on Sunday particularly showed how much they miss the former Liverpool midfielder

Rudi Garcia’s side boast one of the strongest home records in European football and Rafa’s Reds may encounter the second tricky away match of the week, says Richard Aikman “Rudi Garcia’s men, as Ligue 1’s top goalscorers, will almost certainly find a way past Pepe Reina, while a rare attacking approach from Liverpool may well produce a goal flurry at the Lille Métropole.” Liverpool know that this tournament represents their only hope of silverware this season and coach Rafa Benitez, who has twice won this trophy, will throw everything at it in order to silence his growing legion of detractors. However, if the Reds think the trip to Lille will be any more straightforward than Monday’s disappointing trip to Wigan, which ended in 1-0 defeat, they’ve got another thing coming. The French side are lying just four points behind leaders Bordeaux in Ligue 1 and have already shown their pedigree in Europe, overcoming Genoa 3-0, knocking six goals past Genk, firing eight goals past Slavia Prague and eliminating Fenerbahce in the last round

Paul Smith looks ahead to Wolverhampton’s Lincoln Trials card – but without overlooking some nice bets in the next few days “Wednesday brings a couple of runners of interest, the pick of which looks to be By Command in the 21:00 at Wolverhampton. He was slightly disappointing last time but he did come up against a totally unexposed horse who has the potential to be a good deal better than his mark.” There’s not too much of interest in a quiet week but two top-class weekends of all-weather action are coming up – the Lincoln Trial this Saturday and the Winter Derby on the 20th – there is something to look forward to as the majority of the racing fraternity turn their attention to the antics at Cheltenham. Looking back to the week that was, the two performances of interest for the future came from Tous Les Deux and Reprieved . The former is a horse who has been around the block but has been a real moneyspinner since joining Gary Moore.

The lingfieldpark.co.uk maiden stakes run over a mile on Monday looked to contain some horses with the potential to go on to better things. The modest pace does cast some doubt over the form, but, given the promising profile of the winner and the second, it is worth taking a positive view. “There were signs that Merrqaad was still not fully clued up as he carried his head awkwardly and flashed his tail when pressured but, at this stage of his development, he’s worth the benefit of the doubt over his temperament.” Merrqaad duly confirmed the promise he had shown on his debut at Kempton. He shaped well that day, finishing third after showing greenness under pressure. There were signs that Merrqaad was still not fully clued up as he carried his head awkwardly and flashed his tail when pressured but, at this stage of his development, he’s worth the benefit of the doubt over his temperament. The penny did drop in the end, and he knuckled down to get there on the nod; Merrqaad looks capable of winning more races. Al Farahidi made a very encouraging start to his racing career, seemingly paying for his early enthusiasm when collard by the winner late on.

Rory Delargy goes to Catterick for todays best bets, where Ferdy Murphy is fancied to turn over an odds on favourite…. “ Stuff Of Dreams hasn’t exactly set the world alight since joining Ferdy Murphy from Marcel Rolland, but she’d shown plenty of ability in France and served notice that she was adjusting to her new regime with a never dangerous fourth of six behind Jim Tango on her chasing debut over this course and distance.” The best bet of the day comes in the 15:20 at Catterick where Stuff Of Dreams can upset warm favourite Otto Quercus. The jolly has a decent chance on the book as long as he can settle, but that’s the worry, as he can be too free in front and that may set the race up for a finisher. Stuff Of Dreams hasn’t exactly set the world alight since joining Ferdy Murphy from Marcel Rolland, but she’d shown plenty of ability in France and served notice that she was adjusting to her new regime with a never dangerous fourth of six behind Jim Tango on her chasing debut over this course and distance and she will have derived considerable benefit from that experience.

Scotland have lost all three Six Nations games but they’re value to topple boring England on Saturday evening, says Ralph Ellis “Behind Scotland’s dismal run of Six Nations results lie some encouraging performances, not least against Wales until the disastrous last 17 minutes. An autumn win over Australia also underlined the Murrayfield factor where home passion can be worth half a dozen points.” When John Gorman was made Glenn Hoddle’s number two as England manager, there were plenty who wondered how a Scot could handle the job. He had so little trouble that he says he’s still criticised when he ventures north of Hadrian’s Wall for becoming “a turncoat bloody Englishman”! More recently Terry Butcher , the man whose bloodied shirt and headband remains an iconic image of patriotism, was every bit as passionate about his job as assistant to George Burley. So switching sports it should come as no surprise that archetypal Englishman Andy Robinson is burning with desire when he takes charge of a Scotland team against their “Auld Enemy” for the first time at Murrayfield on Saturday night. First of all he’s a top professional coach, and winning matters.

Wednesday 10 March IRELAND'S EYE This weekend we will cast our eye over some of the value races at the Cheltenham Festival on the DAQ especially the more competitive handicaps and the more open contests. Though we are unlikely to see to many stars in action today there are three fairly decent and interesting meetings at Catterick and Fontwell while there are some large fields in Ireland where Naas provides the jumping action. All weather enthusiasts are catered for at Lingfield in the afternoon and later in the day by Wolverhampton.

With the WGC event taking most people’s attention, PGA Tour betting expert Dan Geraghty looks for punting opportunities at the Puerto Rico Open “Manny Villegas was a wonderfully talented college golfer and is now starting his career on the Nationwide tour (where he has had two top 20 finishes from four attempts this year). Manny played in this event last year and made the cut on his first try on the PGA tour.” I am willing to forgive the Elephant Man’s poor performance (poor being the kindest word to describe that first round) last week at the Honda. Despite having no top 25s yet this season, it was only John Merrick ’s second missed cut and his second round 70 at least provided some damage limitation. This week’s course and opposition should be a much more appealing proposition for John, his form here reads well and offers real hope of a first win on tour.

Timeform’s Irish form experts give you three recommendations for racing at Naas… “ Show Blessed is a likeable and versatile sort who is two from two around Naas and may well get an uncontested lead, so he should take a bit of pegging back in a race where there are question marks over several of his rivals…” 2.45 Naas – Show Blessed – back win and place Show Blessed is a likeable and versatile sort who is two from two around Naas and may well get an uncontested lead, so he should take a bit of pegging back in a race where there are question marks over several of his rivals, ground and fitness concerns surrounding Archie Boy, whilst Maca Rince has been let down by her jumping of late. 3.15 Naas – Well Insured – place lay Well Insured is yet to win a race of any description, and though he’s upped his game a notch or two this term, including when fourth at Limerick last time, he’s also left the firm impression that he’ll need the emphasis on speed if he’s to get involved off this sort of mark, something that seems unlikely here. 4.15 Naas – The Burrow Vic – back This is arguably the most competitive race on the card with a host of interesting runners. However, right at the top of that list is handicap debutant The Burrow Vic after his ready success at Clonmel last time, when shaping as if he’ll relish a return to 3m. As an added bonus he’s partnered by an up-and-coming 7 lb claimer, too. Free form for all today’s racing in Ireland and the UK is available at the Timeform website

Our man swerves the favourites this week as he plumps for some big hitting, big priced selections at Doral “Alvaro Quiros made his debut here last year and took to the place like a duck to water before fading to finish 13th. He’s certainly prone to more than the odd bad hole and I was bitterly disappointed with his finish at the Dubai Desert Classic, but he deserves a bit more respect than the layers are showing and 60.0 is definitely too big.” It’s the second World Golf Championship event of the year this week, the CA Championship , staged at the TPC Blue Monster, Doral, Florida. This is the fourth staging at Doral – prior to that it was known as the American Express Championship and was a nomadic event, last staged at the Grove in Hertfordshire in 2006. There’s more than three years course form to peruse though as up to and including 2006, Doral played host to the Ford Championship. The Blue Monster hasn’t been a monster for years now and low scores are commonplace, despite recent course changes to try and toughen it up. Since Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma ravaged it back in 2005, taking out thousands of trees, although GIR (Greens In Regulations) is still an important stat, big hitters have enjoyed improved results, and I’ve focussed a lot of my attention on them this week. The sensible place to start is with defending champion, tournament favourite, and renowned tee-ball bomber, Phil Mickelson , who isn’t an awful price at around 11.0 . He’s had a slow start to 2010 but does seem to be improving with every tournament and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him contend, but I’m going to leave him for now as I feel there’s better value elsewhere

Double figure odds available on today’s selection Today’s 80/20 is Gwyre in the 15.50 at Catterick . This four-year-old filly put in a creditable effort last time out when finishing second to Diklers Oscar at Newcastle. She has finished second in her last three starts but I do not believe her attitude is in question and she could run well at a decent price. At present she is trading at 11.0 on the exchange.

Mumbai have twice been considered amongst the fancied teams in the IPL, yet have twice failed to reach the knock out stages. Andrew Hughes asks whether it might be third time lucky for Sachin Tendulkar’s side. “Keiron Pollard could be the missing piece of the Mumbai jigsaw. His hard-hitting in the lower order could give them the impetus they sometimes lacked last year” Performance Last Time Going into IPL 2009 as many people’s favourites, the Mumbai Indians once again failed to fulfil their potential. On their day, they could look slick and impressive and at the half-way stage, were still well in contention.

The second World Golf Championship is upon us already so we’ve asked “Mystical” Mike Norman to look into his crystal ball and predict which Europeans and Americans will go well this week. “You won’t find a more consistent golfer at 20.0 and above in this market; in fact, all of Henrik Stenson ( 17.0 ), Sergio Garcia ( 17.0 ) and Padraig Harrington ( 15.0 ) can be backed at a lower price than (Oliver) Wilson – which is incredible to believe on what each of those three have, or rather haven’t, achieved in stroke play events recently.” I have to confess to not being a massive fan of these World Golf Championship events, though if I do have a favourite then this week’s CA Championship at the TPC Blue Monster in Doral is most certainly it. My reason for liking this event above the World Matchplay (too much of a lottery), the Bridgestone Invitational (normally a one-man event) and the HSBC Champions (too late in the year) is because it’s played at a point in the season when every player should be close to his ‘A’ game . It’s also played on a course that doesn’t take kindly to wayward tee-shots, poor approach play, or average putting – which effectively means if you’re struggling to find form going into this event then you’ll almost certainly have a tough four days ahead of you. Betfair’s resident golf expert Paul Krishnamurty , and the in-form Steve ‘The Punter’ Rawlings will be giving their thoughts on who they think will win this week, so I’ve taken a look at some of the other markets on offer. Top European It’s hard to look beyond Paul Casey – available to back at 7.6 – as his game appears to be in great order at the moment

Arsenal put five past FC Porto as Fiorentina crash out on away goals in Florence…. “The Italians were matched at 3.5 to win the match and that was ultimately a winning bet, as was the 3.7 Bayern were matched at to qualify. The big winning punters were those who predicted the 3-2 scoreline though, that was matched at the most attractive odds of 95.0.” Arsenal sent a chilling message to the remaining Champions League contenders that they mean business after dumping FC Porto out of the competition by winning the second leg 5-0. A hat-trick from Nicklas Bendtner did most of the damage in a game where they were matched at a high of 1.7 on Betfair to win.
