Serie A Betting: Roma to win and put serious pressure on Inter

Dave Farrar looks ahead to the weekend’s action in Serie A where Claudio Ranieri’s Roma are closing the gap on league favourites Inter Milan and could really turn up the heat on Jose Mourinho’s men by getting the better of the “other Milan” this weekend. “Claudio Ranieri’s side had won eight in a row in the League before throwing away a two goal lead in Naples last week, and even though they’re still troubled by injuries, I think that Roma at home will be too good for Milan.” ROMA v MILAN Milan have the tantalising prospect of waking up on Sunday morning just one point behind Inter in the race for the Scudetto, but first they’ll have to beat Serie A’s in form team in the shape of Roma. Claudio Ranieri’s side had won eight in a row in the League before throwing away a two goal lead in Naples last week, and even though they’re still troubled by injuries, I think that Roma at home will be too good for Milan. Francesco Totti is still out, but there’s a chance that Luca Toni may be fit enough for the bench, and Roma’s strength of will without those two players has been really impressive. They give you the impression of being a squad in the true sense of the word, and the likes of Julio Baptista and Mirko Vucinic have stepped up to the plate in the absence of Totti and Toni. Their chances of winning the midfield battle will be helped by the absence of Gennaro Gattuso from the Milan team, and Roma still have title ambitions of their own, in the knowledge that they alone, among the top teams in the division still have the chance of taking points off Inter. If Roma can win on Saturday night and then beat Inter in three weeks time, then their comfortable looking run in will give them a real chance of a shock title win, and the 18.5 which is available about them winning Serie A isn’t the worst bet in the world

International Friendly Betting: Germany v Argentina

Germany-Argentina is a game for the ages, and it’s a game for the wages too, if Tobias Gourlay’s right about Gonzalo Higuain. Recommended Bet: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 2.08 in Germany v Argentina In the high season of European club football, the best players with German and Argentine passports are obliged to meet in Munich for an international friendly that will have chuffed club managers across the continent. Still, Diego Maradona will be fresh; just last month he completed a two-month ban for a potty-mouthed attack on the gentlemen of the South American press in the aftermath of a narrow win over Uruguay.

Ancelotti faces anxious wait on Cech fitness after keeper limps off in defeat at San Siro. Villa and Spurs through to FA Cup last eight… “Diego Milito picked up the ball from Samuel Eto’o’s sublime flick and cut inside John Terry before unleashing a low right footed shot past Cech.” Jose Mourinho was victorious against his old club as Inter Milan beat Chelsea 2-1 in their Champions League last 16 first leg at the San Siro stadium

World Cup Betting: Argentina’s unlikely great hope

As Argentina continues to be split on Diego Maradona’s credentials and decisons as national coach, Ben Lyttleton looks at how a player who has won just three caps could end up being their key player at a World Cup where so much is expected of them. “Maradona might do well to keep Valdano on his side in future, though

Bundesliga Betting: Ribery is back but so is the Champions League…

Bayern Munich are the in-form side of the Bundesliga at the moment whilst Dortmund have come unstuck over the last couple of weeks. But with a huge Champions League match on the horizon for Bayern this could just be the week to oppose them… “Bayern are understandably strong favourites, but I think they’ll have one eye on the Champions League. They’re up against a Borussia Dortmund side who looked good before their mini-meltdown.” Bayer Leverkusen 1.68 vs Wolfsburg 5.8 , the draw 4.1 Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes insists he’s not panicking, despite watching Bayern Munich move ominously alongside his team at the top of the Bundesliga.

Weekly Tennis Bets: Gonzalez to rule the roost in his own backyard

Having showed a profit once again last week, Sean Calvert returns to the weekly grind of the ATP Tour where Fernando “Hands of stone” Gonzalez should win the Movistar Open in his hometown of Santiago. “As far as the draw is concerned Gonzo, who showed his wellbeing in Melbourne with a decent run brought to an end in a classic by Andy Roddick, has really only Jose Acasuso and Thomaz Bellucci to concern him in his half and the Chilean should have too much in his armoury for those two.” The winners continued at the Australian Open last week, with Rainer Schuettler obliging at a handy 4.8 and Mikhail Youzhny doing the same at 2.82 in their respective first round clashes. That’s not to mention my advice to back Roger Federer at 4.0 at the start of the tournament, so all in all it was another excellent fortnight for our bank balances.

Australian Open Daily Tips: Monaco can beat Llodra from the baseline

The slow Melbourne courts will suit Juan Monaco’s counter-punching style down to the ground and his French opponent’s game is likely to play into his hands too, says Ben Caudell. Meanwhile, a home favourites’ comeback could be short-lived. “Monaco is a baseliner, who grinds out points from the back, a counter puncher, who soaks up the pressure, and Llodra is an ideal opponent for him.” Juan Monaco (ARG) v Michael Llodra (FRA) Seeded 30 at this year’s Australian Open, Juan Monaco has a good chance of reaching the third round for only the second time in his career

Australian Open Daily Tips: Can Blake get back on track against injured Del Potro?

The US Open Champion isn’t feeling 100% and American James Blake is exactly the type of player who can capitalise on an opponent’s woes, says Ben Caudell. James Blake (USA) v Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) If his injury problems persist, this is a potentially disastrous second round tie for number four seed Juan Martin Del Potro .

La Liga Betting: Real’s away days costing them dear

Ben Lyttleton wonders why a Real Madrid star-studded line-up including the likes of Karim Benzema, Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain can’t seem to score enough goals, particularly away from home.
