Europa League Betting Preview: Standard Liege v Hamburg

The German side travel to Belgium with a narrow advantage on Thursday night but are they overly reliant on their classy Dutch striker? Richard Aikman selects the best bets for what should be an absorbing clash. “Both sides have nothing else to play so each are expected to throw caution to the wind. That makes over 2.5 goals an appealing bet at 1.92 .” Hamburg hold a slender advantage from the first leg but Standard’s away goal and strong home record in Europe will leave them full of confidence for the return leg in Belgium. Dieudonné Mbokani gave the visitors the lead last week with a powerful header before two quick-fire replies nudged Hamburg ahead.

Europa League Betting: Hamburg v Standard Liege

Influential absentees suggest a nicely priced away victory is on the cards but could a nagging buttock problem hit Standard where it hurts? Richard Aikman previews “Hamburg were lucky not to lose by more against Borussia Monchengladbach and can only hope that their strong home form in Europe, where they have strung together five wins and a draw in their last six matches, will continue. “ Dominique D’Onofrio knows that if fellow Belgian club Anderlecht can beat Hamburg 4-3, then his Standard Liège side are in with a shout against the Bundesliga side

Europa League Betting: Fulham v Wolfsburg

Tobias Gourlay previews a Europa League quarter final between two teams who have never reached this level of European competition before. Recommended Bets: Back Fulham at 2.32 to win; back Both Teams to Score at 1.9 Fulham move further into unchartered territory on Thursday evening as they contest a first-ever European quarter final, but their opponents, the reigning German champions, are similarly inexperienced and come up against a fine W10-D4-L0 European home record (W6-D1-L0 this season), which includes, of course, a splendid 4-1 win over Juventus a fortnight ago. The Londoners, moreover, are comfortably mid-table in the Premier League and coach Roy Hodgson has said he is now prioritising the Europa League. After a run of injuries, Fulham are getting close to full strength again. Andy Johnson and John Paintsil are still out with long-term knee problems, but Hodgson has been protecting Bobby Zamora , who has a stomach bug, from the unseasonably weather and is hopeful he will be available for this match to take a place alongside the Cottagers’ leading scorer in the competition, Zoltan Gera. 2.34 is a good price for another Fulham home win, but Wolfsburg , who are currently only ninth in the Bundesliga with its second-worst defence , scored in all three of their group-stage away matches in the Champions League and in 2/2 on the road in the Europa League so far.

Champions League Betting: Bayern Munich v Manchester United

Dave Farrar just can’t see how Bayern can get past United, in fact things could get messy at the Allianz Arena “Unless Ribery can produce a vintage performance out of nowhere, then I just don’t see an area of the pitch in which Bayern have an advantage. Mario Gomez is out, and so Miroslav Klose will play alongside Ivica Olic up front, and that looks a little bit lightweight to me against a sometimes shaky, but generally powerful, United backline. “ The Champions League draw threw up two glorious looking ties which are both dripping with glamour and resonance, but whereas Arsenal against Barcelona looks a relatively even match, and at least a competitive pair of games, I can really see only one winner between Bayern and Manchester United . It’s been a strange few weeks in the Bundesliga, with none of the big teams taking advantage of chance after chance, slip-up after slip-up, by their rivals, and Bayern have been as guilty as anyone. Louis Van Gaal ’s team did well to beat the League leaders Schalke in the Cup, but they have lost their last two Bundesliga games, and the news that Arjen Robben could well miss out against United is a real hammer blow. Franck Ribery came on as a half-time substitute against Stuttgart at the weekend, but his injury ravaged season means that he doesn’t look as match sharp as he might, and without their two wingers fully fit and firing, Bayern are half the team that they might be. Unless Ribery can produce a vintage performance out of nowhere, then I just don’t see an area of the pitch in which Bayern have an advantage. Mario Gomez is out, and so Miroslav Klose will play alongside Ivica Olic up front, and that looks a little bit lightweight to me against a sometimes shaky, but generally powerful, United backline

The Pay As You Lay Column: From Burnley to Germany

Andrew Atherley expects a goal-fest at Turf Moor, PSG to keep firing blanks and the magic to fade for Hoffenheim… “Hoffenheim a fairytale success during their rapid ascent to the Bundesliga, but the magic has started to fade and now they have to be regarded as a risk at short odds even against second-bottom Freiburg.” Lay under 2.5 goals at 1.96 in Burnley v Blackburn This season’s first renewal of this fierce local rivalry produced five goals at Ewood Park in October and this rematch could follow suit. Burnley, impressively, are one of only three Premier League teams to have scored in every home game (the others are Chelsea and Liverpool) but they also have the joint-lowest number of home clean sheets (three in 15 home matches). Their home matches against lower-level opponents have tended to be high-scoring (five out of eight against bottom-half teams have had over 2.5 goals), while two-thirds of Blackburn’s away games have had over 2.5 goals, including 10 of the 12 in which they have conceded, which indicates a good chance of a high-scoring game if Burnley continue their excellent home record.

Jonathan Wilson: Is the Bundesliga Europe’s most unpredictable league?

Given the excitement of recent seasons, it almost feels that the Bundesliga this season is anti-climactic, what with only three teams going for the title. Even the Premier League can manage that occasionally, writes Jonathan Wilson. “Bayern need a win against Stuttgart on Saturday 1.6 to prove that last week’s defeat was a blip, and not a sign of wider decline. They remain 1.55 favourites to lift the title.” Bayern Munich , rejuvenated under Louis van Gaal after their worst ever start, had seemed likely to surge away with the Bundesliga title, as they put together a run of 19 games unbeaten including nine straight wins. Arjen Robben has been outstanding, having finally returned to fitness, cutting in from the flank to score 10 league goals this season. He is another of the inside-out wingers – Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo being only the two highest profile; even somebody like the right-footed Steed Malbranque at Sunderland has benefited since a switch to the left in recent weeks – who seem such a feature of modern football.

Premier League Betting: Are Fulham Europe’s most improved club?

Fulham were on the brink of relegation when Roy Hodgson arrived at the club just over two years ago. Now they’re in the last eight of the Europa League. Feizal Rahman discusses the rise and rise of the Cottagers. “Their progress from relegation fodder to seventh place last season must make Fulham the most improved club in England, if not Europe.” In 1996, whilst the mighty Juventus were claiming a Champions League trophy, Fulham were at an all-time low – finishing 17th in the old Division Three. Fourteen years on and the small family club of West London dramatically edge the Italian behemoth out of the Europa League

Bundesliga Betting: Robben to keep rocking Bundesliga defences

Kevin Hatchard is full of praise for the fleet-footed Arjen Robben and knows the talented Dutchman will have to keep performing if Bayern are to keep winning, starting with this weekend’s trip to Eintracht Frankfurt. “Robben’s influence is also being felt in the Bundesliga.
