Europa League Betting Preview: Atletico Madrid v Valencia

Richard Aikman believes we could see goals galore in the second leg of this hotly contested quarter-final between two Spanish teams. “Over 2.5 goals is a miserly 1.66 but over 3.5 is a more appealing 2.64 ; when you consider that Valencia hit four in their last away match in this competition a goal fiesta is not out of the question.” As the 2-2 first leg at Mestalla proved there is little to separate these two exciting sides, but we can at least rely on the goals to flow Thursday’s eagerly awaited Spanish derby. The last three UEFA Europa League matches involving these attacking outfits have produced an impressive 16 goals, and the 3-0 home victories for each at the weekend underlined their attacking nature. Valencia strengthened their hold on third place in La Liga by overcoming Osasuna thanks to second-half strikes by Joaquin and David Villa (twice), while Atlético saw off Deportivo La Coruña after Juanito, Diego Forlan and Tiago each scored for the hosts.

Europa League Betting Preview: Standard Liege v Hamburg

The German side travel to Belgium with a narrow advantage on Thursday night but are they overly reliant on their classy Dutch striker? Richard Aikman selects the best bets for what should be an absorbing clash. “Both sides have nothing else to play so each are expected to throw caution to the wind. That makes over 2.5 goals an appealing bet at 1.92 .” Hamburg hold a slender advantage from the first leg but Standard’s away goal and strong home record in Europe will leave them full of confidence for the return leg in Belgium. Dieudonné Mbokani gave the visitors the lead last week with a powerful header before two quick-fire replies nudged Hamburg ahead.

Champions League Results: Messi destroys Arsenal with one of the greatest performances

Magical display from Barca’s Argentine maestro ends Wenger’s European dream at the Nou Camp and Mourinho’s men win in Moscow. “Messi got behind Arsenal’s back four and lifted his shot past Almunia to seal his fourth hat-trick of 2010.” Lionel Messi gave one of the finest individual performances in European football history as his first-half hat-trick condemned Arsenal to the Champions League exit. The Gunners took the lead at the Nou Camp in the 18th minute through Nicklas Bendtner . The Austrian striker sprawled over as his shot was palmed away by Victor Valdes but he managed to pick himself up in time to hook the rebound into the Barcelona net. The Catalan side looked disgusted with themselves at going behind in front of their fans and they responded only three minutes later when Messi fired the ball into the top corner of Manuel Almunia’s goal. The diminutive Argentine gave his side the lead after 37 minutes when he picked up possession in Arsenal’s area, ghosted past his marker and slotted the ball home. Minutes later Messi got behind Arsenal’s back four and lifted his shot past Almunia to seal his fourth hat-trick of 2010.

The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Tuesday April 6

A tip from the Joker to get your betting day under way… The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 1.76 in Rheindorf Altach v Wacker Innsbruck A distinct lack of festive spirit in Alsace last night. Not that Alsatians are usually associated with much joviality. Just a goal apiece for Strasbourg and Metz then, and a blot on the Easter Bank Holiday for the Joker. Perhaps he can wipe it clean with a match from the rarely seen Austrian 1.Liga. Rheindorf Altach have nine goals from their last three at home, where five of the last seven have gone Over 2.5 Goals. Visiting Wacker Innsbruck are the Tiger Woods of the division – scoring freely away from home.

Premier League Results: Liverpool draw and go out to 5.7 for Champions League spot

All the in-running prices from this afternoon’s Premier League action. “Liverpool may have all but kissed goodbye to their chances of finishing fourth in the league after drawing 1-1 away to Birmingham, a scoreline matched at 10.5 on Betfair after Steven Gerrard had given the Reds the lead.” Liverpool may have all but kissed goodbye to their chances of finishing fourth in the league after drawing 1-1 away to Birmingham, a scoreline matched at 10.5 on Betfair after Steven Gerrard had given the Reds the lead. Rafa Benitez’s side were matched at a low of 1.22 when in front and having the majority of the chances, with the draw drifting to 6.8 in-running. Having traded as low as 1.14 for a Champions League spot earlier on in the season when looking solid, they are now out to 5.7 with Man City strongly fancied at 1.82 after their 6-1 drubbing of Burnley yesterday. Spurs are out to 4.1 after losing at Sunderland yesterday. Fulham’s win against Wigan has dragged Roberto Martinez’s side into the relegation fight and they’re now 6.6 for the drop. In truth, it was a match they really shouldn’t have lost after going a goal up against a side whose minds were clearly on their Thursday night showdown with Wolfsburg in the Europa League

Sporting Comebacks: Tiger’s in good company

As Easter is the season of resurrection and with Tiger Woods due to return to action at Augusta next week, Eliot Pollack thought it was high time we had a close look at the sporting (and spiritual) icons who have made successful comebacks… “After his comeback goal against Liverpool, one journalist claimed the eight month absence had made Cantona an ‘even better player’.” The irony of Tiger Woods returning to competitive golf, at a club which precludes women members, does not need spelling out. In case it does, Woods’ prolonged self-imposed absence from the game was of course due to issues surrounding women and his own member.

The Over/Under 2.5 Goals Column: Rooney’s absence should see the goals dry up at Old Trafford

Ed Nicholson looks at the big match of the weekend as Chelsea visit Old Trafford and Wolves’ trip to the Emirates in search of over/under 2.5 goals value. “With United casting one eye on their second leg quarter final match against Bayern Munich next week, and without the influential Wayne Rooney I can see United being quite tight and compact here. Chelsea too will want to get a result – and a draw is not a bad one for them. So a low scoring draw is foreseen.” Man Utd v Chelsea This game now has a completely different feel to it following Chelsea’s impressive 7-1 success against Aston Villa last Saturday and, perhaps even more pertinently, Wayne Rooney’s injury in midweek. And for those who have been saying that Man United have only performed so well this season thanks to Rooney’s tremendous form, this Sunday’s game against Chelsea will either go some way to proving them right or wrong. Obviously one match will be far from conclusive on that score, but it does just happen to be against Chelsea at a time of the season when losing any game could prove decisive in deciding league titles or relegation battles

Champions League Results: Two-goal comeback stuns Barca and their backers

Gunners show determination to deny Barcelona at The Emirates while Inter secure slim win “After a goalless – and breathless – first half, the Gunners’ hearts were broken just seconds into the last 45 minutes, as they fell behind to a two-goal ambush from Zlatan Ibrahimovic . At that point Barcelona were matched at 1.04 to win the game.” The odds are against Arsenal reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League but they sure won’t go down without a fight.

In that spell, Stevenage have conceded just one goal whilst Luton have scored 27! Yep, that’s 20 seven goals in seven games for the Hatters who have gone onion bag bonkers after the winter respite and must now play football’s answer to Ebenezer Scrooge if they are to land the automatic promotion back to the Football League that the Kenilworth Road faithful desperately crave.
