Premier League Results: Park heads United out in front

United pull clear after derby win at Old Trafford while Chelsea drop points at Blackburn… “United’s title odds have come in to 2.04 while Chelsea have drifted out to 4.1 following their draw at Blackburn.” Ji-Sung Park scored the winning goal as Manchester United’s title odds were slashed to 2.04 after they beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford. United had lost their previous three to Liverpool and it looked as though this might be a fourth as chief tormentor Fernando Torres headed the visitors in front after five minutes. United drifted to 3.4 before Javier Mascherano hauled down Antonio Valencia minutes later in the penalty area. Pepe Reina pulled off a superb save from Wayne Rooney’s spot-kick but the United striker followed up and tapped in his 33rd goal of the season. In the second half, United dominated possession before Park met Darren Fletcher’s pin-point cross on the hour to head the home side in front.

Premier League players you didn’t realise would be at the World Cup: Fulham

It may have been a long hard season for Fulham but for a number of their players there will be no time to rest this summer… “Dempsey has an uncanny knack of making things happen in games that look to be drifting along aimlessly.” John Pantsil – Ghana John Pantsil has been an ever present figure in the Fulham starting 11 since Roy Hodgson brought him to the club in the summer of 2008. After a largely unsuccessful spell with West Ham, Hodgson plucked him from the Hammers and was repaid with consistent and dependable performances. After an impressive start to the season, the Ghanaian picked up a cruciate knee ligament injury and has been out of action ever since. The hope is that he will return before the end of the season and if he does so he is a certainty to go to the World Cup.

Premier League Betting: Aston Villa v Wolves

The games are coming thick and fast for Aston Villa at present but they look a lot better equipped to cope with it than they were last season. Jaymes Monte reports… “There is little incentive for Villa to go out and exert maximum effort in order to win by three, four or five goals; instead they will be looking to reserve as much energy as possible as the games come thick and fast for them. A narrow home win would suit just nicely.” Aston Villa ’s season fell apart after a draw against Stoke in early March last year; it took them eight league games before they recorded another victory. There were murmurings in the media of a repeat scenario after the goalless draw at The Britannia Stadium on Saturday, but any uneasiness that Villa fans might have been feeling were quashed within three days as they took maximum points from Wigan on Tuesday night.

Ben Davies: Lee Hughes can still score goals at any level

In his last column before a one month break, Ben Davies tells us about the talents of Kasper Schmeichel and Lee Hughes and why the Notts County dressing room is the place for pranks and good comaraderie. “Another player who has got a lot of coverage this year is our striker Lee Hughes. Hughesy is having a great season and has scored 26 goals already. Lee makes the hardest thing in football look easy – scoring goals. He is great to have in your team and I am delighted I do not have to play against him. He would score goals in any division.” As we approach the last stage of the season we are now beginning to catch up with our games in hand and the League table is now taking shape. It really is going to be a fascinating end to the season with a number of teams all vying for the automatic places and play-off spots with the fight to stay in the division looking as tight as it is at the top. We played Bournemouth live on Sky Sports on Monday night in what turned out to be a very disappointing draw for us as we conceded in the last minute of the game

Classic World Cup: Saeed’s Special Solo Slalom

Not many Saudi Arabians have earned a place in World Cup folklore, although thanks to his memorable solo goal against Belgium in 1994, Saeed Owairan bucks that particular trend…
Picking up the ball in his own half, Owairan glided past several Belgian challenges before slotting the ball passed the keeper for what [...]

The Championship Betting: In-form Reading set for a tough afternoon at the Riverside

Despite winning four on the bounce, Reading will struggle to get anything from their visit to Middlesbrough says Andrew French. Our man also expects Nottingham Forest to maintain their promotion push and Blackpool to win again. “As Nottingham Forest’s away form appears to have totally deserted them (six consecutive defeats), their stunning home form is essential to their hopes of promotion. Forest have won 10 on the bounce at the City Ground, a run which has seen them score 27 times and concede a meagre four.” Reading may be top of the Championship’s current form table, but scratch below the surface of the statistics and you’ll find good reason to back Middlesbrough to beat them this weekend. The Royals have won four consecutive league games as new manager Brain McDermott charts a path to safety away from what had threatened to be a relegation battle

The Over/Under 2.5 Goals Column: Goals at a premium at Old Trafford

Ed Nicholson looks at this weekend’s matches at Old Trafford and Craven Cottage in search of the over/under 2.5 goals value. “With them losing 1-4 at Old Trafford last time you can also be sure that he won’t want his players taking any chances early on. All of which means the chances of a low scoring game are increased – especially if the home team do get a defender sent off – which is more likely than not in this fixture, given the most recent 270 minutes of football data.” Man Utd v Liverpool Three of the last six encounters between these sides have ended in over 2.5 goals affairs but usually matches between these sides at Old Trafford are low scoring encounters. But with Liverpool having embarrassed Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 1-4 last year, there’s every chance that United will be extra motivated to win comfortably here. Despite Liverpool netting four times on Monday night against bottom club Portsmouth in the league, they still looked far from comfortable when defending and with Wayne Rooney in such scintillating form I believe United could score two or three goals – but I feel Liverpool will be set up to defend so that becomes less likely. But the quandary for the purposes of this column and those looking to place an “under or over” bet on this contest is whether Liverpool are capable of scoring against United’s defence – and the question has to be yes. Nemanja Vidic has been made to look fairly ordinary against Fernando Torres in recent head-to-heads and I believe that Torres well and truly scares the life out of him, and an ever-slowing Rio Ferdinand. The Serbian has been sent off in three consecutive games against Torres while Liverpool have beaten United in all three of those games

The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Thursday March 18

A tip from the Joker to get your betting day under way… The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 2.12 in Rapid Bucharest v Astra Ploiesti Dynamic Bucharest did their bit yesterday, scoring a couple of times, but Stale Bucharest didn’t do theirs, failing to score at all, leaving the Joker a goal short of a winning bet and a few quid short of being able to finish his business with the Romanian Liga. The quickest way out of there might be with Rapid Bucharest , who are at home to Astra Ploiesti this evening. Eight of Rapid’s 10 home Liga games this season have gone Over 2.5 Goals, just like five of Astra’s last eight on the road. Godspeed, people! Recommendation: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 2.12 in Rapid Bucharest v Astra Ploiesti
