IRELAND’S EYE on Thursday

Thursday 15 April IRELAND’S EYE Cheltenham stages its second of its 3 day fixture this evening and provides the only jumps action in England/Ireland today while is the second day of the Craven meeting at Newmarket. In addition Ripon on the turf and Kempton on the all weather later this evening provide the remaining flat action in Britain while Tipperary start a seven race flat card at four in Ireland. We will be taking on a ‘hot’ favourite in a competitive novice hurdle in the Cheltenham opener and later on the same card a course winner is taken to score over an extended three and a quarter miles for the first time in a hunter chase. Our nap was a late defection yesterday but we did not go empty handed as savers Playboy Luke (5/2-2/1) and Cadspeed (5/2-9/4) gave us a brace of winners at Gowran. From Dawn To Dusk (3-11/4) Gates Of Rome (6/4-11/8) were another couple of selections to fill the frame. The Philip Hobbs trained Captain Chris has been making a big name for himself since shaping well in a bumper at Kempton – taking a brace of hurdles on a sound surface in facile style in the last 5 weeks at the same venue. This expensive purchase looks a horse of some potential but the six yesr old may be opposable on his first try on a more testing track today as he lines up in the Class 2 novice hurdle at 2-10 over 2m 1f. The one that can overturn the ‘jolly’ is the three time ex French flat winner Salden Licht from the Alan King yard who opened his hurdle career with two good wins on softer ground at Plumpton and Kempton before running well in defeat in taking third in a decent Grade 2 hurdle on a return to Kempton where he had Frascati Park (ran well in taking runner up in competitive Punchestown last week) just in front where the pair were well beaten by a promising Paul Nicholls hurdler.

IRELAND’S EYE on Tuesday

Tuesday 13 April IRELAND’S EYE Exeter provides the jumping action today while the flat action is at Yarmouth and Pontefract. In Ireland Limerick stages a twilight flat meeting with all of the top yards saddling plenty off runners. Our focus will mainly be on the National Hunt action however and a former point winner can provide the answer to a competitive handicap hurdle while at Limerick a Pat Flynn trained runner can spring a mild surprise in the closing maiden. Narrow winner Robin De Sherwood (13/2-11/2) ‘saved our bacon’ yesterday in the closing hunter chase at Sedgefield but was something of a frustrating day otherwise.? Saver Floreana (7/2) looked set for victory in an earlier hunter chase from our nap Dix Villez (3-5/2) but she declined the last and to add insult to injury the latter was outstayed by one of the ‘rags’ close home. The Phillip Hobbs team are in full flow at present and it could be rewarding to row in with their representative Penylan Star in the 2m 7 1/2f novice hurdle at Exeter today at 2-40.

IRELAND’S EYE on Monday

Monday 12 April IRELAND’S EYE It must be the start of Summer today as Windsor opens their season while there is also an interesting flat card at Folkestone today. We will be operating at Sedgefield this afternoon however where there is an interesting amateur riders jump meeting with Nina Carberry picking up a couple of mounts in the opening races. An older gelding can ensure we get off the day in good fashion by landing a hunter chase earlier on the card at decent odds while a previous Cheltenham scorer should oblige at a shorter price in another hunter event later in the card.

Sunday 11 April IRELAND’S EYE Heartiest congratulations to the champ Tony McCoy this morning after landing the greatest chase on earth with Don’t Push It yesterday and on was great to see what it meant to the multi timed champion rider in addition to J P McManus and Johnjo O’Neill. On a busy Sunday there is a flat/National Hunt double in Ireland at Headquarters (Curragh) and Limerick respectively while Southwell, Kelso and Market Rasen provide the jumps action in the UK. We will be concentrating on Limerick and Kelso however and at the former venue Edward O’Grady can be on the mark in a competitive hc chase while a decent and recent point to point scorer can land the bumper

IRELAND’S EYE on Thursday

Thursday 8 April IRELAND'S EYE Aintree kicks off today with an excellent card that include half a dozen Graded contests and one Listed event while Taunton may be just a ‘bit player’ but nevertheless they do have some fine fare on offer for jumping enthusiasts away from the ‘madding crowd’. The Tizzard yard can spring a minor surprise in the Grade 2 novice chase at Liverpool whilst we will be opposing the warm favourite in the hunter chase at Taunton. Though there a few disappointments yesterday we did however keep up our winner a day sequence when Day Of Destiny (12-10/1) easily took the opener at Fairyhouse for trainer Pat Colville

DAQMAN on Thursday

Thursday 8 April DAQMAN? DARING DAQMAN IN JACKPOT MOOD FOR AINTREE: Daqman dares three jackpot bets on the opening day at Aintree but is not in such a hurry as some to lay the short-priced favourites. 16 FESTIVAL LAYS IN A ROW: The man who laid 16 consecutive losing favourites at Cheltenham Festivals is planning five lays this week to bring his total to 500 since the column began. There’s one today, and he wants them all to count to maintain his overall strike-rate of 76%. 120 POINTS PROFIT: ? After a winning streak of 120 points profit from Easter week, Daqman marks your card for every Aintree race at the three-day meeting. Remember the invincibles at Cheltenham? Both got ‘beat’! Now, for Dunguib and Kauto Star at the Festival, we could read Big Buck’s and Imperial Commander at Aintree today. But it’s never that simple, is it, or the layers would all retire with fortunes as big as a banker’s bonus

DAQMAN on Saturday

Saturday 10 April DAQMAN? DAQMAN FINDS THE DRAMA IN THE NATIONAL: There’s a boys’-own story and a triumph over adversity all in one in Daqman’s Grand National winner, just the sort of drama the big race throws up year after year. HE’S DONE IT AGAIN WITH THREE HOT LAYS IN A ROW: Daqman is gunning for two more favourites, which will bring his total to 500 lays since the column began at an amazing 76% success rate. He has three in a row at Aintree this week: Sanctuaire (3rd 13-8), Menorah (2nd 7-4) and Forpadydeplasterer (2nd 4-1). Now, to cap his 500, he’s trying to dispose of joint favourites in the same race!? 9-1 WINNER FOR A PROFIT ON THE DAY: He made a profit on the second day at Aintree of 18 points, with six returns, including Wayward Prince (won 9-1). How to pick the Grand National winner? It’s easy: just try to spot a dramatic story in advance. It has one every year

Timeform Race to Watch: Monday 5th April, Yarmouth 1:45

Although very early in the season, the opening race at Yarmouth on Bank Holiday Monday, a maiden race run over a mile, looks sure to throw up winners. The pace was sound and there is every reason to take a positive view of the form with the first half of the field all shaping with varying degrees of promise. “ Admission , who had already been gelded before his debut, ruling out the Classics, produced an eye-catching performance to suggest that he will be fast-tracked to pattern company sooner rather than later.” Admission , who had already been gelded before his debut, ruling out the Classics, produced an eye-catching performance to suggest that he will be fast-tracked to pattern company sooner rather than later. He seemed to do everything well within himself and was soon clear under a hand ride from jockey Hayley Turner. Admission’s breeding suggests that he will be suited by further in time, but, he showed that he wasn’t lacking speed over a mile. It would be easy to be disappointed with Clockmaker’s performance, given he was sent off a short-priced favourite to score at the second time of asking
