MLB National League Preview: Phillies going for three in a row

The 2010 baseball season starts on Sunday April 4 .Below is a preview of the National League with each team’s current World Series odds. “Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers are in position for another crack at making the post season. This is a team that can score plenty of runs and has quality pitching. Manager Joe Torre has done a wonderful job with this team and another good season is on the cards. They could be the value bet at these odds.” Philadelphia Phillies ( 8.0 ) This team is bidding to make the World Series for the third straight year after coming up short against the Yankees in six games in 2009. The Phillies are one of the elite teams in baseball and have an abundance of talent. They added pitcher Roy Halladay to the rotation this winter but traded Cliff Lee to Seattle. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be in contention once again this year.

IRELAND’S EYE on Monday

Monday 29 March IRELAND’S EYE National Hunt racing takes somewhat of a break today with just Towcester picking up the baton for the jumping fraternity but there are two interesting meets on the all weather at Lingfield and Wolverhampton. A former three point winner can follow up a narrow Sandown hurdle success while a 9yo can land his second course success in a handicap chase half an hour later at Towcester. We returned to profitable ways on Sunday with a four timer at three meetings in Ireland and England. Our nap Nice One Eric (7/4-6/4) opened proceedings by landing the opening novice hurdle at Wincanton from our saver Rougham (15/8) and we duly followed up with Hampshire Express (evens) taking the hurdle at Downpatrick under Ruby Walsh. Saver and short priced favourite Triggerman (4/6-8/15) took a novice hurdle at Wincanton later in the day while former point winner Lackamon (13/2-9/2) completed the four timer by taking the Hexham bumper for the Sue Smith yard. In addition Supreme All Star (3/1) was travelling well when exiting two from home in a handicap hurdle at the Northern Ireland venue

Six Nations Betting: England feeling green ahead of Ireland match

Five England players have been struck down with a virus ahead of Saturday’s match at Twickenham. In a game where the final 15 minutes could be crucial, illness might make the difference between victory and defeat, says Ralph Ellis. “It’s worth having a more ambitious bet on England/Ireland in the half-time/full-time market at 8.4 .” There are some things that are in a coach’s control. Team selection, tactics, warm-ups, training routines, scouting the opposition. And then there are some things that aren’t.

Cheltenham Favourites: Big Buck’s

Big Buck’s doesn’t dominate a race like some of the other Cheltenham ’sure-things’ but he will never – ever – give up and that makes him a hero for his in-running backers on Betfair. So, can he do it all again at the World Hurdle? Alex Steedman looks for the answers

“I have a feeling there is more 007 in Big Buck’s that he lets on. I think he is bursting with so much natural talent that he gets bored and I reckon Ruby plays up to it. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the maestro Walsh hams it up, but it’s a very delicate blend of kidology and coercion and probably from both sides. And that always nudges the door ajar for the others.”

Six Nations Betting Preview: Wales v Scotland

Every coach knows that losing your first match of the Six Nations is a hammer blow to your chances of being crowned champions. Wales and Scotland bid to pick themselves up off the canvas this Saturday after sucker-punch defeats to England and France respectively and the home side look better placed to get on the road to recovery at the Millennium Stadium, writes Geoffrey Riddle.

Six Nations Betting: Scapegoat Alun-Wyn Jones to take his revenge out on Scotland

As John Terry was being villified in England over the weekend, Welsh Rugby Union star Alun-Wyn Jones was suffering a similar fate but for very different reasons in the Valleys.

The Over/Under 2.5 Goals Column: A low-scoring Merseyside Derby

Ed Nicholson’s attentions are turned to Anfield, the Stadium Of Light and Old Trafford this weekend as he goes about trying to decipher which matches will be “overs” and which will be “unders” this weekend. “Four of the last six encounters have been under 2.5 goal matches at Anfield, with an average of just 1.66 goals per game and the way Liverpool have been playing, this looks nailed on to be another low scoring contest.” Sunderland v Wigan The Black Cats looked a very poor team on Monday night when they limped unimpressively to a 0-0 home draw with Stoke – a side, remember, who have scored just four away goals all season

Six Nations Interview: Warren Gatland

Wales won the Grand Slam two years ago but had a dissappointing Six Nations campaign last year. Geoffrey Riddle met Warren Gatland to discuss kicking, counter-attacking and dodgy haircuts. Visitors to the Millenium Stadium tend to come out kicking.

Premier League Betting: Sunderland v Stoke City

It’s not the most glamorous match of the weekend but Stoke’s visit to a horribly out-of-form Sunderland may provide a good betting opportunity by siding with the away side, says Richard Walker. “So for true stats fans, my chief suggestion – to back Stoke at 3.9 – will not sit easily, but here are two sides who could barely feel much more different about their own lot.
