DAQMAN on Thursday

Thursday 8 April DAQMAN? DARING DAQMAN IN JACKPOT MOOD FOR AINTREE: Daqman dares three jackpot bets on the opening day at Aintree but is not in such a hurry as some to lay the short-priced favourites. 16 FESTIVAL LAYS IN A ROW: The man who laid 16 consecutive losing favourites at Cheltenham Festivals is planning five lays this week to bring his total to 500 since the column began. There’s one today, and he wants them all to count to maintain his overall strike-rate of 76%. 120 POINTS PROFIT: ? After a winning streak of 120 points profit from Easter week, Daqman marks your card for every Aintree race at the three-day meeting. Remember the invincibles at Cheltenham? Both got ‘beat’! Now, for Dunguib and Kauto Star at the Festival, we could read Big Buck’s and Imperial Commander at Aintree today. But it’s never that simple, is it, or the layers would all retire with fortunes as big as a banker’s bonus

Imperial Commander given rating of 184 for Cheltenham win

A golden era for staying chasers, say Timeform “The fall of Kauto Star, in our eyes, failed to stop the Gold Cup being a race of rare quality, a tremendous duel between two top-notch horses resulting in one of the best-ever performances in the great race, a test worthy of the Blue Riband of steeplechasing.” Timeform spokesman Kieran Packman Timeform today announced that Imperial Commander has been given a rating of 184 for his Cheltenham Gold Cup success. This places him amongst the top ten chasers of all time and confirms that, in the view of the esteemed ratings organisation, this is a top-notch crop of staying chasers. Imperial Commander ( 5.9 to repeat at Cheltenham, 2011) joins Kauto Star ( 6.2 ) and Denman ( 15.5 ) in the select band of chasers to have broken the 182 barrier . Reflecting on the other championship-winning performances last week, Binocular is now rated 168, the highest Champion Hurdle winning performance since Rooster Booster in 2003, whilst Big Buck’s and Big Zeb emerge from their victories with ratings of 174+ and 169 respectively. Kieran Packman , Timeform’s spokesman, commented: “

Cheltenham Festival Ratings Review

Timeform examine the ratings achieved in victory at this year’s Festival, and place them in a historical context… ” A figure of 184 places Imperial Commander in very select company indeed. Not only does he fully deserve to be talked about in the same breath as the two aforementioned Gold Cup winners, but also along with some greats of the past, such as Moscow Flyer and Burrough Hill Lad (both also rated 184).” History may well record the latest Cheltenham Festival as a bloodbath, with the defeat of several apparent bankers heaping misery upon punters. However, the eclipse of the likes of Dunguib, Master Minded and Kauto Star does not necessarily mean that the Festival was in any way substandard. Indeed, the Championship races in particular were generally well up to scratch . The Gold Cup itself was long-billed as the showdown between the two outstanding steeplechasers of their generation, Kauto Star and Denman.

Big-Race Perspective: The Cheltenham Gold Cup

A Festival which produced a succession of unexpected results and at which plenty of the star names underperformed had one last trick up its sleeve in the eclipse of Kauto Star, the best chaser in more than forty years, whose bid for a third Gold Cup ended on the floor, but that failed to stop this being a race of rare quality, a tremendous duel between two top-notch horses resulting in one of the best-ever performances in this great race, the first two drawing a long way clear after three out. The early pace wasn’t so strong as anticipated but it had picked up by halfway and ensured this was a proper test of stamina, a test worthy of the Blue Riband of steeplechasing. “ IMPERIAL COMMANDER ’s narrow defeat by Kauto Star at Haydock suggested he’d made further progress since his Ryanair win last season and, back at a track where he has such a fine record (six wins now), he showed the extent of it, producing a performance even better than Kauto Star’s in winning this race last year.” IMPERIAL COMMANDER ’s narrow defeat by Kauto Star at Haydock suggested he’d made further progress since his Ryanair win last season and, back at a track where he has such a fine record (six wins now), he showed the extent of it, producing a performance even better than Kauto Star’s in winning this race last year, beating an even stronger Denman than that horse had for all he didn’t do it by quite so far, impressing with his jumping, always travelling well, clearly going better than the runner-up four out and getting on top once in the straight, ridden to extend his advantage after the last. He’s a year younger than both his chief rivals and, as such, ought to be regarded as favourite for next year’s renewal at this stage, and with the novices looking to have plenty to prove a second Gold Cup might well be his next March. The Bowl at Aintree was reportedly nominated as a possible target nearer to hand. DENMAN finished second in the Gold Cup for the second successive year, producing a better performance than when he’d landed the race in 2008 this time around, going with plenty of zest up with the pace but not quite so comfortable as the winner from four out and unable to match that one in the straight. He’ll reportedly have the Grand National as his principal target next season, but surely couldn’t be discounted if he makes a fourth appearance in this race, while a third Hennessy really would be something.

Cheltenham Review: 2010 Festival saved the best until last

Simon Rowlands looks back on the final day of Cheltenham and the Fesitval as a whole and finds that Imperial Commander’s win was the finest of them all “Following months of expectation, the scarves and banners, the news coverage and the pop song, it still had to come down to the horses themselves to do the talking. The 2008 winner Denman found his voice again, but the 2007 and 2009 winner Kauto Star fluffed his lines, and in the end a horse emerged who was more fluent than either of them.” They came from far and wide to Cheltenham on Friday to see ‘The Showdown To Beat All Showdowns’ between Kauto Star and Denman in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and got served up something rather different but still very special. Following months of expectation, the scarves and banners, the news coverage and the pop song, it still had to come down to the horses themselves to do the talking. The 2008 winner Denman found his voice again, but the 2007 and 2009 winner Kauto Star fluffed his lines, and in the end a horse emerged who was more fluent than either of them.

Cheltenham Gold Cup: Imperial Commander eclipses the big two

Huge surprise at Cheltenham as Kauto Star and Denman are beaten by Imperial Commander “Pre-race publicity focused on Paul Nicholls’ duo, winners of the last three runnings, but a crashing fall from a struggling Kauto ended his involvement and Denman was ousted up the Cheltenham Hill for a famous victory.” It was billed as Kauto Star v Denman but in the end Imperial Commander took the Gold Cup honours at Cheltenham today . Pre-race publicity focused on Paul Nicholls’ duo, winners of the last three runnings, but a crashing fall from a struggling Kauto ended his involvement and Denman was ousted up the Cheltenham Hill for a famous victory. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ nine-year-old rewarded punters willing to look beyond the front two with a 9.9 success at Betfair SP and 70.0 in the ante-post markets. A strong ride from Paddy Brennan in the Cheltenham gloom saw Imperial Commander always up alongside the leaders. Kauto, who sweated up before the race, was not his usual self and was being pushed along by Ruby Walsh before going down.

DAQMAN on Friday

Friday 19 March DAQMAN  DAQMAN ON TOP OF THE WORLD: Daqman used Betdaq facilities to bag a bundle of better-value bets in the World Hurdle yesterday. He warned to wait for a better price for his maximum-stakes banker Big Buck’s (won 5-6 SP) and had huge back-and-lay success as he correctly nominated pacesetters Fair Along and War Of Attrition at 142.0 and 48.0 before offers tumbled to a fraction of those odds in running. Today he takes 215.0 and 74.0 offers. SENSATIONAL 16 LAYS IN A ROW: Meanwhile his amazing world-record lays sequence marches on: he made it 16 consecutive losing favourites at Cheltenham with his fourth maximum-stakes lay this week, flooring Alfie Sherrin (only 12th at 11-4). SEVEN IN A ROW IN 12 DAYS: That made it seven in a row in the last 12 days, and four out of four at this year’s festival following six at each big Cheltenham meeting in 2008 and 2009.?? GOLD CUP SHOCK: Daqman turns up some simple stats on the Gold Cup which suggest that not even Arkle or Golden Miller could win the race today. As Oscar Wilde might have said, for Paul Nicholls to have one champion may be regarded as misfortune but to allow him two may be deemed carelessness

Cheltenham Placepot: Friday 19th March

Today is our final chance to try and crack the Cheltenham Placepot and, while it looks typically tough, we can at least enjoy (and bank on) the superb Kauto Star who looks to have a third Gold Cup at his mercy.
“Kauto Star is undoubtedly the best chaser of his generation, and if [...]
