IRELAND’S EYE on Thursday

Thursday 8 April IRELAND'S EYE Aintree kicks off today with an excellent card that include half a dozen Graded contests and one Listed event while Taunton may be just a ‘bit player’ but nevertheless they do have some fine fare on offer for jumping enthusiasts away from the ‘madding crowd’. The Tizzard yard can spring a minor surprise in the Grade 2 novice chase at Liverpool whilst we will be opposing the warm favourite in the hunter chase at Taunton. Though there a few disappointments yesterday we did however keep up our winner a day sequence when Day Of Destiny (12-10/1) easily took the opener at Fairyhouse for trainer Pat Colville

Find Me A 100 Winner: Jason Day

Big-hitting Day has the goods to deliver a three-figure win at the Shell Houston Open “Day has been mentioned as a top prospect, but at this early stage of his career, only tends to be a factor when conditions are ideal. That could well include Redstone, where Day finished an impressive eighth on last year’s course debut. “ Overseas players have thrived since the Houston Open moved to Redstone in 2006; particularly Australians. Of the 13 players to make the top-3 here, five were Aussies, including two winners. An even bigger clue to picking this week’s winner could lie in the driving distance stats , as Redstone is very much a long-hitters’ course. One rank outsider who ticks both of those boxes is 150.0 chance Jason Day, even if his recent form figures are ordinary at best. Day has been mentioned as a top prospect, but at this early stage of his career, only tends to be a factor when conditions are ideal. That could well include Redstone, where Day finished an impressive eighth on last year’s course debut.

Andalucia Open Betting: Four Euro Tour maidens who could break through in Andalucia

There are a clutch of high-class golfer without a European Tour win to their names. Paul Krishnamurty identifies four who are ready to take their chance soon “Gareth Maybin has become a consistent challenger – missing only one cut since July – and had previously shown an ability to finish the job on the Challenge Tour.” On Sunday, Rhys Davies duly rewarded those loyal backers who’ve followed this excellent Welsh prospect since he graduated from the Challenge Tour. Davies was simply superb in Morocco, but I doubt he’s markedly superior to numerous other up-and-coming players who are still looking for that elusive breakthrough win on the European Tour. This week’s Andalucia Open boasts pretty much the same limited line-up as we’ve just seen in Morocco, offering a golden opportunity for the following four first-time winners-in-waiting. Louis Oosthuizen Having won five times already in his native South Africa, Louis is seriously overdue in Europe.

Cheltenham Newslines: Positive pre-Gold Cup talk from McCoy and Walsh

Mike Vince has been talking to the major players before Gold Cup day at Cheltenham “After a blank Third Day, the Irish will be desperate for some final day success, though alarm bells ought to be ringing amongst the Cheltenham Executive and BHA that the final race, usually one of the most competitive of all the handicaps, has failed to attract a single Irish trained runner. It’s an unwanted and worrying occurrence.” It was dank and drizzly as darkness fell at Cheltenham last night, but the forecast suggested little if any prospect of enough rain to change the ground significantly as racing counts down the minutes to the most mouthwatering of Gold Cup clashes. Tony McCoy was shaken by his two heavy falls on Thursday but the Doctor did not get a red entry so he is set to try and mastermind the dethroning of a champion, and the Ulsterman believes it can be done. “I think Denman ’sHennessy win proved him back to the levels of two years ago.” he says. “If he reproduces that it will be a very exciting race between two great horses who have achieved an awful lot.” Ruby Walsh has already proclaimed Kauto Star as the “horse of a lifetime” and adds: “His record is there for all to see and anything he wins now is a bonus.” Trainer Paul Nicholls could not hide his delight at Kauto Star at his pre-Festival media day. His view? “Kauto looks magnificent but Denman has definitely come on for the Newbury ‘experience’. Kauto Star will arrive here off the back of three months away from the track and that brilliant King George win at Christmas

Wolverhampton Placepot: Thursday 18th March

Not an experiment as such, but time for something a bit different, namely a go-for-broke straight line. There are so few apparent angles at Wolverhampton this evening that we may as well adopt the risky-but-rewarding strategy of taking just the one in each race, hoping to maximise what’s likely to be a low payout: it may only be a dividend of £10 to £20, but if you have that five or even ten times, that’s well worth winning isn’t it? Sounds easy in prospect, but now for the hard part of negotiating our way through: “Pound for pound, Thunderstruck is the best fighter on the all-weather circuit, renowned for his ability to scrap out a finish, and he’s ideally drawn for an attacking ride” 5.45 – Lewyn is on a roll, but the feeling is that she’s at the top of her peak whereas Fair Passion is just starting her ascent. The style rather than substance of her reappearance win at Southwell suggests Fair Passion has plenty more in her locker, and this sharp, turning track promises to suit her even better. 6.15 – The mere fact that Appalachian Trial is now hawking about in sellers says a lot about his dwindling ability and enthusiasm, and New Star is a far more solid placepot proposition, in the frame on all his starts this year, all round Wolverhampton. 6.45 – One may get past Thunderstruck , but we doubt two will. Pound for pound, Thunderstruck is the best fighter on the all-weather circuit, renowned for his ability to scrap out a finish, and he’s ideally drawn for an attacking ride

Premier League Darts Betting: Week Six

Jaymes Monte looks on in hope and anticipation at the prospect of Raymond van Barneveld returning to his best form… “It may be premature to say that the Dutchman has conquered his demons but the signs are there and the possibility that he could be back to his best means that the 2.5 on him beating King tonight is a price not to be sniffed at lightly.” It was refreshing to see Raymond van Barneveld play so well against Terry Jenkins last week and not for the first time there will have been many who were thinking, what if he is back for good this time? He has been waxing lyrical for weeks about how well his new darts have been going in practice but a poor performance against Phil Taylor sent onlooker’s eyes rolling at the familiar sight of another Barney self-capitulation. Yet when all seemed lost for the five-time World Champion and many were writing him off as a spent force, he brought those practice darts to the stage in Manchester last Thursday and blew Jenkins away. The task now is to prove that that performance wasn’t a flash in the pan and show some consistency with the new darts. Aside from Taylor himself Barney couldn’t have asked for a more difficult opponent to prove himself against than Mervyn King . ‘The King’ became the first player to take a point off Taylor last week and looks to be pretty much on top of his game at present. However, when both players are at their peak Barney wins this one every time. It may be premature to say that the Dutchman has conquered his demons but the signs are there and the possibility that he could be back to his best means that the 2.5 on him beating King tonight is a price not to be sniffed at.

Rory Delargy’s Festival Yankee: Thursday

It’s been a week for the bookmakers so far at Cheltenham as several of the most strongly fancied runners have been beaten out of the placings but Thursday could be the day that punters get their own back on a card which looks eminently solvable.

Timeform Daily: The World Hurdle, Cheltenham 3:20

A look ahead to the feature contest on day 3 of the Festival, where Big Buck’s will look to rule the world again… “ Big Buck’s completed his transformation into a top-class hurdler when landing this contest from Punchestowns twelve months ago. He is unbeaten and has been impressive in three starts since and it will take something special to topple him.” Big Buck’s completed his transformation into a top-class hurdler when landing this contest from Punchestowns twelve months ago. He is unbeaten and has been impressive in three starts since and it will take something special to topple him. Cape Tribulation looked an exciting prospect when winning his first two starts over hurdles, but his limitations have been exposed since. He has been kept to shorter distances this term but a return to three miles is unlikely to make much difference. Cousin Vinny was an outstanding bumper performer in 2007/8 and was classy over hurdles last term, too. He has failed to cut the mustard as a chaser this season, though, and this bid seems a bit of an afterthought

In-running Betting: Cheltenham special

Neil Munro salutes an in-running stalwart, dusts off his Harris and thumbs the form books as he selects the horses which will offer the best trading opportunities at Prestbury Park next week. “Dunguib will determine for many whether they have a good Cheltenham or one to forget when he runs in the very first race of the meeting.” Before I look at some Cheltenham plays for next week, I must mention the retirement of an in-running favourite. Boundless Prospect was due to race for the last time at Southwell earlier in the week but had to miss his farewell run due to taking a knock on his hind leg. Boundless won 18 times in his 101 starts including seven on the fibresand at Southwell. He became a favourite for in-running backers as he was so often held out the back, outpaced at times, getting pushed along, before coming into the home straight and out staying his rivals
