Andrew Flintoff: What does Freddie have left in the tank?

As Andrew Flintoff attempts to come back from yet another injury, Paul Moon questions his commitment to Lancashire and whether we’ll ever see him play for his country again. “Lancashire must expect his influence to be minimal and for his absences for one reason or another to be frequent and they must plan accordingly. The IPL and the England ODI team will be the most financially-rewarding way to end his career and therefore his main concerns.” After undergoing a successful micro-fracture operation on his right knee in January Andrew Flintoff now believes he will be able play four-day cricket. He had originally intended to just play one-day cricket for Lancashire, England and IPL Franchise the Chennai Super Kings. Lancashire coach Peter Moores followed up by saying that Andrew has a real desire to play for his county and influence the dressing room for the forthcoming 2010 LV County Championship campaign. Some of us are not so sure. Initially there will be good intentions

Serie A Betting: Genoa games usually mean goals

Dave Farrar focuses on matches involving some of the less fashionable sides in Serie A this week in search of the best betting opportunities. “There’s so much attacking talent on view, that it’s hard to narrow down just who the dangermen will be, but either play safe and go for over 2.5 goals at around about 1.83, or take a little bit more of a chance at a bigger price.” GENOA v CAGLIARI Genoa and Cagliari are level on points in Serie A, and both have a chance of a place in next season’s Europa League, so there’s much to play for at the Marassi. And it’s also a chance for two of the brightest and most positive thinking coaches in the division to go head to head. Gian Piero Gasperini of Genoa and Massmiliano Allegri of Cagliari like to play attacking football, and those philosophies mean that they have been two of the highest scoring sides in Serie A, and are highly likely to produce more goals on Sunday. Genoa get a regular mention in this column, especially when they play at home, and their home games have been worth following in the goals markets, with 11 out of 15 matches at the Marassi producing over 2.5, and their last home match, against Bologna, finishing 4-3 in favour of the visitors. Six of Cagliari’s last seven Serie A games have produced at least three goals, and they’re not afraid to go away from Sardinia and mix it. The game is teed up beautifully, with Genoa desperate to atone for that home defeat last time, and Allegri certain to try and take advantage of any home frailties. It could produce a classic, and I’ll be amazed if there aren’t goals at the Marassi on Sunday afternoon

NBA Weekend Betting: Championship contenders to the fore

Nick Shiambouros updates us on the NBA scene ahead of an intriguing weekend of b-ball action “Things could not be more competitive in both Conferences. There are a host of teams that have a legitimate chance of winning the title but only two dominate the betting. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers are both currently trading at 3.45 for the NBA championship.

Golf Betting: McIlroy lets the Tiger out of the bag

Rory McIlroy has helped to increase speculation that Tiger Woods may return to golf sooner rather than later, says Ralph Ellis. So should you bet on him winning a Major in 2010

The Pay As You Lay Column: Goals to flow at the Stadium of Light

Can Sunderland’s defenders contain Manchester City’s attack? Should European big names be opposed at short odds? Andrew Atherley selects the best lay bets of the weekend. “Only the top three have scored more away goals than City’s 22 and the only teams to stop them scoring on the road have been Tottenham, Everton and Birmingham – all better teams than Sunderland.” Lay under 2.5 goals at 1.9 in Sunderland v Manchester City Manchester City’s much-vaunted problems on the road do not extend to a lack of goals, and that factor could help to push this match towards a high-scoring encounter, if not quite as high as City’s 4-3 win in the reverse fixture in December. Over 2.5 goals was exceeded in the opening 16 minutes on that occasion and there are reasons to believe that mark will be surpassed again, at least within the 90 minutes. Only the top three have scored more away goals than City’s 22 and the only teams to stop them scoring on the road have been Tottenham, Everton and Birmingham – all better teams than Sunderland.

IPL Betting: King’s XI Punjab v Delhi Daredevils

Tournament favourites Delhi are in action against King’s XI in Mohali and if they can’t see off the depleted hosts, they are in trouble. Ed Hawkins previews the third match of the IPL Venue and conditions Expect runs. Chennai smashed 240 in the first game at the PCA stadium in Chandigarh in IPL1

The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Friday March 12

A tip from the Joker to get your betting day under way… The Joker’s Bet of the Day: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 2.42 in Nimes v Chateauroux It turns out the new SV Hamburger can be just like the old SV Hamburger. As they were winning 3-1 against Anderlecht last night, the Joker got to thinking about how some things are just not meant to be: McDonalds might have painted all of its restaurants green, but should never be regarded as a healthy option; so SV Hamburger might have brought in an Italian-sounding coach (Bruno Labbadia), but they should never be regarded as an under-goals team. Tonight’s game is Nimes versus Chateauroux in France’s Ligue 2. You might think you know where this is going, but wait… Six of Nimes’s last seven home games have gone Over 2.5 Goals. They’ve won four of the last five 2-1 ( 9.6 in the Correct Score market), but the Joker’s obliged to find a more likely bet, so, because six of Chateauroux’s last nine on the road have also gone Over 2.5 Goals, that’s what he’s plumping for this evening. Over goals in France, eh? Yes, it’s very brave indeed.

La Liga Preview: See the stars? Ignore them

Tobias Gourlay suspects that the stars are not a good form guide and looks beyond the Big Two to find the value in this weekend’s Spanish-football markets. Recommended Bets: Back Barcelona/Barcelona at 2.16 v Valencia; back Real Zaragoza +0&+0.5 at 2.0 v Racing Santander; back Sevilla at 1.72 to beat Deportivo La Coruna A 2-2 draw for Barcelona in Almeria and a 92nd-minute winner for Real Madrid allowed Los Blancos to finally close the gap to the reigning champions.

League Two Betting Preview: Make or break March

When you eat a sandwich, the best bit is in the middle. In similar fashion, gamblers should not just look to the obvious games at top or bottom for their weekly bets, but to the play-off hopefuls, writes Ian Lamont. “Back John Sheridan’s men at 1.85 at home to Port Vale, whose boss Micky Adams outlined a few weeks ago what his side needed to do to reach the top seven.” Northampton have taken a fair while to come to the boil this season. Yet now they sit near the top of the form table, arguably at the best time of year to kick on

Davis Cup Betting: We lose because we’re not good enough

Ralph Ellis offers a frank estimation of the Davis Cup defeat to Lithuania and considers the wider malaise of British tennis. “If managing the England football team still carries the moniker created by Graham Taylor of “the impossible job”, then it’s nothing compared to running Britain’s Davis Cup side.” For a good number of years, being Britain’s Davis Cup captain was just about the easiest job in sport. You got out your team sheet and pencil, wrote down the numbers one and two, put the name Tim Henman against the first and Greg Rusedski against the second. Next you put both names down again after first writing the word “doubles”.
