MLB National League Preview: Phillies going for three in a row

The 2010 baseball season starts on Sunday April 4 .Below is a preview of the National League with each team’s current World Series odds. “Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers are in position for another crack at making the post season. This is a team that can score plenty of runs and has quality pitching. Manager Joe Torre has done a wonderful job with this team and another good season is on the cards. They could be the value bet at these odds.” Philadelphia Phillies ( 8.0 ) This team is bidding to make the World Series for the third straight year after coming up short against the Yankees in six games in 2009. The Phillies are one of the elite teams in baseball and have an abundance of talent. They added pitcher Roy Halladay to the rotation this winter but traded Cliff Lee to Seattle. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be in contention once again this year.

DAQMAN on Monday

Monday 29 March DAQMAN? CLASSIC MYTH: Daqman wonders why punters keep on backing the class-trial favourites, when they just keep on losing. NATIONAL MYTH: Later in the week, he’ll expose another myth; this time about the Grand National. LINGFIELD NAP: Today he spots a race at Wolverhampton in which the chances are unequal and a race at Towcester which is usually won by outsiders and has Betdaq value at 19.5. His nap is at Lingfield. There’s a song by Sandy Denny (you’re too young) which asks ‘why are they so surprised when it snows’? The racing version would be why are they so surprised when classic-trial favourites are beaten? Two more yesterday: neither one reached the first three; both were 2-1. In fact, the top stables of Bolger, O’Brien, Oxx and Weld produced just one well-beaten runner-up from 11 Leopardstown trial runners.

NBA Weekend Betting: Playoff pressure can inspire pair of wins

Nick Shiambouros is concentrating his efforts on teams that need to win with the playoffs just around the corner “Chris Bosh is still relatively unknown outside the NBA and this immensely talented individual is fully aware that a good playoff run by Toronto will elevate his marketability no end. I am anticipating a big effort from Bosh and company at Chicago and while this is bound to be a hotly contested affair my money will be on Toronto .” Miami Heat crushed the Chicago Bulls 103-74 with a dominant display at the Chicago Center on Thursday. This was one of the best performances I have seen all year long from this Miami rotation

NBA Betting: The Messiah comes to Charlotte

The greatest basketball player of all has gone back to his roots to take over the Charlotte Bobcats. But will his ownership lead to an upturn in the North Carolina outfit’s fortunes? “Charlotte has one of the best home records in the Eastern Conference and has only lost eight games all season.” Michael Jordan officially became the new owner of the Charlotte Bobcats last week .The league approved a $275 million sale from Bob Johnson to Jordan, who had been a part-owner since 2006. Jordan is the first former player to become a majority owner of an NBA franchise. Jordan grew up in Wilmington NC and played basketball for the University of North Carolina . In 1982 he made a last minute shot to win the NCAA tournament for the Tar Heels in an epic game. He is arguably the best player ever to play the game and has six NBA titles to his name. Today Jordan has a chance to help his own team make the play-offs with his wealth of experience and leadership qualities

Pattern Race Review: National Clues at Newbury?

It was pretty quiet on the pattern front last weekend, but an impressive win in Kelso’s biggest race for Bygones Of Brid merely served to underline the claims of Tell Massini at next week’s Festival. Meanwhile, there was a shake-up in the Grand National betting after Newbury’s feature. ” Big Fella Thanks needs to show a bit more mettle if he’s to win a National, but perhaps the key lies in whether Paul Nicholls can retain the services of the excellent Barry Geraghty, who seemed to establish an immediate rapport with the son of Primitive Rising.” I’ve been very keen on Tell Massini since seeing him rout Reve De Sivola in the mud at the Paddy Power meeting and was delighted that one of his victims at the December meeting, Bygones Of Brid , has done so well since and that horse, in the colours of James Callow, capped a fine campaign for trainer Karen McLintock by winning the totepool Premier Kelso Hurdle in fine style on Saturday. Probably a non stayer when racing at three miles, he nonetheless paid a compliment to Tom George’s Albert Bartlett favourite.

Timeform Weekend Review

Paul Nicholls has won almost every major prize in National Hunt racing, but there is still one that eludes him; the most high-profile race of them all, the Grand National. The Ditcheat maestro has sent out forty-four horses in the Aintree showpiece event without success. There have been plenty of false dawns in recent years for the Nicholls yard, but this year he has the top two in the ante-post market (Tricky Trickster and Big Fella Thanks) as he looks to end his drought in the world famous race. “There have been plenty of false dawns in recent years for the Nicholls yard, but this year he has the top two in the ante-post market ( Tricky Trickster and Big Fella Thanks ) as he looks to end his drought in the world famous race.” Big Fella Thanks shot to the head of most ante-post markets on Saturday with a taking display when winning the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury. With regular partner Ruby Walsh on board stablemate Pasco , it was Barry Geraghty who got the leg up, and the pairing looked like a match made in heaven. Travelling strongly into contention, he idled once in front but looked value for a good deal more than the bare margin. He will race off a 3 lb lower mark than when finishing sixth in the National last season, and he looks to be a worthy favourite for the race.

IRELAND’S EYE on Saturday

Saturday 6 March IRELAND’S EYE It’s a busy day on the jumps scene today with 3 fine meetings in England and Scotland while Gowran gives Irish racing supporters a fine opportunity to grab some of the pre-Cheltenham expenses. With Doncaster and Newbury winding up their two days cards and Kelso on the borders we are spoilt for choice today on the DAQ but our main hopes will rest on the Irish front where a well regarded sort looks a sound bet in a bumper while in the UK a Nicky Henderson staying type is taken to make it a double over hurdles at Kempton. Gentle George (5/2-9/4) and saver Salut Flo (13/2-11/2) gave us two winners on the board yesterday and Molostiep (10/1) – a saver proved next best to the former in the closing hunter chase at Newbury. In addition we landed our sole lay when the free going Flemmingsbond (9/2) departed when seemingly held late in the opening contest at Doncaster whilst our saver The Big Orse (6-9/2) was just touched off in a novice hurdle at Newbury. Nicky Henderson has suffered a couple of Cheltenham setbacks in recent days but the ace trainer can land the 2m 5f novice hurdle at Kempton today at 2-15 with the 6yo Benarctic. Though the Beneficial gelding had to work hard to land short priced odds in a Southwell bumper he seemed to appreciate the step up in distance when landing a Ludlow 2m 5f maiden hurdle over three weeks ago in battling fashion.
